The raven is truly an amazing creature for many reasons, not least of which being their iconic appearance. The intelligence and resourcefulness of ravens are legendary, as well as their social sophistication and memory. Ravens have a complex sense of humor and mate for life. Being a local creature that also lives abroad, they somehow embody the spirit of Alaska.
Their legendary personality and essence have been captured in paint, carvings, stories, and religion for thousands of years by all cultures who encounter them.
The mixture of their striking appearance and high intelligence always inspires me to capture them on paper. These sketches are part of my ongoing series of portraying ravens in graphite.
