About KD Art

Discover hyper-realistic art inspired by Alaskan wildlife.

About the Technique

The technique I use involves layering color by beginning with a very light layer of grey color laying the piece out. After that, I go back and work my way from the top left corner to the bottom right corner of the subject and then work my background around it. Before any color goes on, I fully complete the eyes. The eyes being completed gives me the feel that I am bringing the animal to life.

The backgrounds of my pieces are usually Faber-Castell watercolor pencils with the subject itself being Faber-Castell polychromous pencils. I use white and/or black pen and graphite pencils often as well. Watercolor pencils have the dual capability of drawing “dry” or can be dipped on a wet sponge to “paint” with as well. Polychromous pencils make finer lines that create a sharper image for my subject.
